Just bought a 1978 Scamp, all systems are working but it needs some asthetic TLC. Interior is in desperate need of paint. does anyone know what I should use? Also, cushions and covers need replacement, looked at Scamp website but fabric was ugly. Any ideas where to go for that? Appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Nancy, and congratulations on your new Scamp!

Since you have a 1978, I assume you have the Ensolite walls (light grey and vinyl, with a texture like elephant skin). Ensolite is very scrubbable, so if yours hasn't already been painted, you might consider simply trying to clean it.

If it has already been painted, and that's not in good condition, then you probably do need to paint. Or if you just want to.

We've had lots of really informative threads on painting, with details about preparation, brands and types of paint, application techniques, etc. They can be searched either with the search function here, or with something like Google (type in the words you want to search, followed by "site:fiberglassrv.com" only leave off the quotation marks).

I don't know of any source of ready-made cushions or covers other than Scamp. However you can cut your own foam with an electric turkey knife. Or, if your current foam is supportive enough for you, but just dirty, you can clean it ("grape stomp" in bathtub, or etc.).

For covers, except for the Scamp ones, I think you would either have to make your own, hire someone to make them, or maybe find a used set here or elsewhere in the classifieds. They don't crop up too often, but I have seen them.

Bill,

That was the "hire someone to make them" part from my post. What I was saying was that I don't know of anyplace but Scamp that sells them ready-made.

I don't know of any marine shop that would not have to make them to order.

Wow, can't believe you all responded so fast. Raya, thanks, have been scrubbing for 2 days, got the mold off, but it is hopelessly stained. I searched paint last night and found the Zinser stuff, thought it looked like a possibility, glad to hear someone has used it with good results. I appreciate all the help and will post pictures when I am done.
Thanks,
Nancy

Nancy, I use a regular upholstery shop for recovering my cushions. You could call and get estimates most of the shops do this type of work all the time. For the 17' Casita I paid $120 to recover 4 small cushions in the small banquet area (we keep the bed made up all the time in the back) and for my 13' I paid $75 to recover the bottom sofa cushion. Very reasonable I thought. I've sewn these type of covers before and believe me, it's easier to just pay the money and not have to hassle with putting in the piping for the edges and the zipper. In my case, both of my cushions were new and I just didn't like the color and style of the fabric, so the foam part was okay to re-use.

Nancy,
The mold caught my attention. We had mold too. Before and after shots of cleaning and painting with details can be seen in this post.

We JUST painted our 1977 Scamp that had some staining. We used Kilz Casual Colors Interior/Exterior Satin Latex paint tinted to Vanilla Creme and it came out awesome. It needed more then one coat, but it is amazing what a new coat of paint does. I attached before and after pictures
