Terryjan 17ft bigfoot change 2way Fridge to 3cu ft electric wiring questions

Have removed and am relocating plug socket.
Had 2 110v wires together on one socket. One only reads 40v ?? Had 2way fridge plugged in.
Any ideas on this. Have wired 110v for new 3cu fridge and capped off 40v wire.
thanks for any input, Terry

It's possible that you have aloose or broken neutral. It's a common problem many in house wiring. Although the meter usually reads round 80, I have seen it lower. You can use a meter with a long wire for jumper check continuity of the neutral wire between the outlet and the power box. If it is a grounded outlet a outlet tester works even better. It will tell you if anything is miswired and if there is a wire broken or loose. There cheap and a good tool to have around the house. Keep in mind

Update Fridge wiring.
OK Just found half my 110v plugs not working.
Seems the second wire on fridge plug is the carry on to the rest of the system. Reading was actually .40v
On connecting the wires together again all working now.
Cheers, Terry

It's apparent that you don't really understand electricity or electrical wiring. Pleas take to a certified technician to trouble shoot and repair.

I would suggest that you check all of the 120 v wire connections in the outlets, lights, and any junction boxes for loose wire, wire nuts and connecting screws. It's not very time consuming or difficult and could save you problems or a fire down the road. I suggest this because if on location has loosened up it is possible that others have and if they start arcing they cause a lot heat. Very easy to avoid by tightening connections. Work with the power disconnected.
Remember that neutral wire have the potential to kill. It's carrying the unused electricity back to the suppy. You touch it and a groud at the same time the power may flow through you instead.

Terryjan, don't let people who think they no everything take years training get to you. Please don't back a way from the forum. You'll get good information and the benifit a lot of experience. What your doing is simple house hold wiring and trouble shooting. Get one of the very simple wiring made simple book. It is always important to keep safety in mind. The 120 volt system are very basic residential wiring in most cases.
Good luck.

sometimes people who don't "speak the language" used by professionals describe things in a way that leads people to thinking they did something wrong when they actually got it correct. I think that is the case in this situation.
