Given the widely-accepted recommendation of 10-15% tongue weight for most classes of bumper-pull trailers, the J2807 specification of 10% isn’t random in the sense that it has a rational basis in best practice.

But perhaps you mean "arbitrary" in relation to the actual capacities of the vehicle itself. While that is certainly possible, it is more likely they designed the rear suspension specifically to accommodate that 500# rating.

I've test driven the Ascent and really like it. One thing that keeps holding me back from buying it is that it's a 4 cylinder engine. I was hoping for a 6 cylinder.
