Cloud wheels

I have a cloud with the old style wheels like an old VW beetle with right and left threads. Are they still OK to use?

Cool

1. Is the only issue the thread direction?
2. Are they otherwise in good condition with no cracks, and the threads not damaged?
3. Do you have all of the corresponding nuts? Do the wheels have brakes, and if so, are they made by Dexter?
(this is a non-issue for wheels without brakes)

If your answers to the above questions are all "yes" then I would use them.

Dexter is the ONLY manufacturer of 7" trailer brakes still in business. When my original equipment brakes on my Fiber Stream wore out, they weren't Dexters, so I had to replace the entire hub.

The whole thing did a 400 mile trip

[I bought the egg and towed it home for 3oo miles with no issues except it got real wet in the rain. Rain so bad that in a 65 mph expressway we were all going 30. Towed great. I just want to make sure there were no isues with these old style wheels. No brakes. I'll replace the tires.

The only problem I can see is towing it at 65MPH.

I'm not familiar with Cloud wheels, or for that matter, VW wheels. Do the wheels themselves have threads or is it the hubs that have the threads? If it's the hubs, you may be able to change just those, to ones with regular lugs, that fit a wheel you prefer. Just make certain of wheel size and offset to fit in the wheel well.

But agree with Frederick's assessment as long as there are NO cracks..even tiny ones and the wheels have no dents and are completely round, they should be fine to use.

The vw bug rear hubs had huge castellated nuts (literally shaped like a castle turret, or a rook in chess) on threaded axle that screwed down in different directions on each side to help keep them from spinning off, and you put a cotter pin through a hole on the end of the axle that was captive in the castellation for some additional insurance.

Other than having to carry a 6' breaker bar to generate 250ft-lbs, a pretty massive, 36mm or so socket and a handful of cotter pins on long trips, I don't see a problem
