30mpg with the Outback when not towing???? Seriously? You have gotten that? .... gezzz I never came close to seeing anything starting with a "3" on the gas milage computer on any of the 3 Outbacks I owned. 23 or 24 were common number & 17/18 around town .... and yup those are US gallon numbers due to being a US imported car. Subaru must have done some big time improving on their gas milage in later models.

Have not really noticed any additional issues with additional 2' in length with the truck and trailer combo - still get into small camping spots.... have notice the difference in finding parking for the truck on its own around town though [/QUOTE]

Hi Carol,
We have a ton of Outbacks in this area, and up until a few years ago, I heard the same complaint about not so good mpg on the Outback. But, most of the mpg complaints were the pre-2010 models that some of our friends had. Our 2014, even just driving 1/2 mile to work and back,(I should be walking to work!) really not even warming up the car, still gets 23. On the highway last winter we got almost 40 mpg when we had a relatively flat run at around 55 mph. At 75mph mpg goes down quite a bit. Still, when I go on an extended drive on the highway, over 30mpg is routine. The 2014 is rated 24/30mpg and that has proved accurate in our case. The 2015 bumped up to 25/33mpg, so I guess Subaru is working on improving mpg.

Right now I also have an F250 crew cab, 245" long, and it just barely fits it most parking spots and hangs out in others, so hopefully the 210-230" truck I plan on replacing the F250 with should be an improvement.

Thanks for the comments
Mark

Thanks, Wayne, Yes--too bad the Subaru Outback suspension won't handle more tongue weight. It's a very stable tow for the size of the car.

Our 2014 Ford Escape 2.0L FWD actually gets around 34 mpg (not towing) at 65 mph. ☺

WOW, that's above the EPA numbers for Escapes of 28-32 MPG Highway, but those are "Averaged" figures.

If I let off slightly on the gas on my old 1987 Corvette the MPG display would jump up to over 50 MPG at 80 MPH (In Nevada of course)

WOW! 104 responses to this and still going strong...love the "my vehicle gets more miles per gallon than yours" ...and always way more than EPA estimates.

One thing is clear...Sabaru has been listed as a very dependable choice by Consumer Reports....they say it is now equal to Toyota, the number one most dependable brand on the road!

In all my years on the road I have never had any problems with my long rig parking at Walmarts for my re supply needs. I have seen monster 5th wheel rigs parked with ease in Walmarts....and let's face it...if Walmart doesn't sell it you really don't need it!

Happy Camping!

Yep, in this forum "Size Matters" as in:

FGRV Size & Weight: Smaller is always better if it fits your needs.

MPG's: Bigger is always better, but only if you can still tow safely.

Oh I did see numbers in the 30's and higher pop as it was happening - actually sometimes way higher - normally when going down hill ;-) just did not ever see number is the 30's for an average over a hundred miles or more - not even when not towing.

So it sounds like Subaru has done some major improvements in regards to MPG's.

From the Subaru website...Outback....available in 2.5 L/4 Cyl rated at 25 MPG City and 33 MPG Highway. Also available with 3.6 L/6 cyl engine. Towing info: 2,700-3,000 pounds, no details provided ( I'll assume that is with a 6 cyl for the max).

It is interesting to note the MPG info states "up to" when stating the 25/33 MPG rating.

Two years ago I saw a 21 MPG rating for this model.
Keep in mind this is a full time 4 wheel drive vehicle.

I routinely get 29-31 with my 2014 4-cylinder manual transmission outback on the highway (not towing) and recently averaged 32.5 mpg driving from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, with a kayak strapped on top, highway at average probably 64-65 mph. Factory says 29 highway.

With the 13' Burro attached I'm between 19 and 23, depending on terrain and prevailing winds, and it always feels rock-steady.
