Boler license plate holder

Wondering if anyone can help me sort out a little wiring problem with the license plate holder on my Boler. The light for the license plate wasn't working when we bought the trailer, I'd like to get it working again, thought it was just a burnt out bulb but seems to be a wiring issue, and I know very little about wiring.

If you look at the attached photo, the one wire that runs out of the trailer to the holder is taped to another wire inside the trailer, that wire has a connector on the end of it, but is not attached to anything. I'm assuming this unattached wire is the ground, but not sure where it should be grounded to. Realize this is probably a very basic question, but like I said, I know beans about wiring and hoping someone can help. Thanks.

I have different lengths of wire, with a clip on the ends. the wire with clips on it's ends, I would attach to the connector, and look for a ground source, to touch to or attach the other end to, I think you are right to think the second wire is the ground. If power is on to the running lights, and it can be determined where other items ground to, ie. metal surfaces or a bolt to the frame, or look for white or green wires and what they are attached to. Is the first wire hooked into another wire? There should be a couple of wires under the license plate light, going to the stop, tail light as you look into the compartment, the tail light is on the corner with wires coming out going down to the floor, it will have a ground wire you can attach to.

hope this can help

P.S. you should get a test kit to check hot and cold wires

Later kenny

I didn't really follow all of your reply, realizing that my original post may not be that easy to follow though. It looks to me as though there are two wires that are intended to go to the license plate light. One of them comes through the wall of the trailer to the license plate holder, and is screwed down on the holder, along with the thin metal plate that sits up against the back of the light bulb. You can see that wire in my original photo.

The other wire doesn't come through the wall of the trailer to the holder (maybe it did originally?). That wire has a connector on the end of it, similar to the picture that I'm attaching to this post. I'm thinking this connector needs to attach to the license plate holder in some way in order for it to be grounded, but can't see a place for it to attach.

I'm basing my assumption on the way that my side marker lights are wired. On these, there are two wires coming to the marker light, a green and a white (same as the license plate holder I think). Hope this all makes sense.

Don, I hope this document in the Document Center will help you. It's for a Scamp, but wiring is wiring: Fiberglass RV - Document Center - WiringDiagram_Scamp

Best of luck!

The wire(white?) w/terminal on the inside the trailer needs to supply the ground to the fixture. It should be attached to the fixture mounting bolt on the inside the trailer. You need to verify the function of the wires first. White (inside ground) black 12VDC hot.

Once you buy one of those 2 dollar testers you will be able to see where the issue is. Wont hurt to lightly burnish the rust dot of the inside bottom tab with an eraser or something abrasive.

Thanks for everyone's input, looks like I got it sorted. A lot of my confusion I guess was due to the fact that the ground had not seemed connected to the fixture to begin with, although I guess maybe it just got disconnected somewhere along the line. Found a way to get the ground connected again, and it's working.
