Ford Ranger & 3.5 liter Eco Boost
I just read that they are going to build / equip the new Ford Ranger with the 3.5 liter eco boost engine used in the F150
Seems like a lot of power for a small truck but then again maybe it’s designed for towing .

That's pretty interesting. We've been looking at Class Bs and a couple of brands are building on the Transit van with the 3.5 EcoB. Supposed to be a great engine, though when given the choice I stuck with the 5.0 for my 150.

I needed a truck to haul my Scamp 19 gooseneck, and ended up with a Ford F150, 2.7 liter ecoboost, 2 wheel drive. It tows the Scamp just fine, and I love that I get much better gas mileage than with my Honda Pilot!

My 2.7 F150 tows my 5.0TA Escape effortlessly. If Ford where to go Ecoboost in the Ranger I think the 2.7 would be a better fit.

You probably read about the new NWM Ranger built under license from Ford. This company is a South African outfit specializing in Dakar type cross country racing. The3.5 is replacing the Coyote V 8 they are currently using.
🤔 what does that say for the 3.5? Anyway this is absolutely not a production vehicle, it’s a very specialized and expensive racing machine.

My son was looking at a new Ford Ranger for towing his boat and travel trailer but was apprehensive due to the 4 cylinder engine
The 2.7 liter V6 Eco Boost does seem like a better fit for a small truck than the 3.5 liter
My wife’s vehicle has the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder GM turbo which seems adequate for powering a small SUV but not sure if it’s suitable for towing
It would be nice if Ford would offer the Ranger with a larger optional engine instead of the current one size fits all approach .

I'm pretty impressed with the 2.3 Ecoboost they have in the Ranger. Finally got to tow our 3,000 lb Scamp 16 with it and it was comfortable and pulled with more gusto than our V-8 Dakota.
Right now, you can get any drivetrain combo you want, as long as it's a 2.3 with 10 speed tranny and 3.73 rear axle. :-)
I can't really say what our towing MPG will be yet since our first trip had pretty strong headwinds but I suspect it will be around 17-18 MPG normally, with solo trips already between mid 20's to best tank of 30 MPG.
Worst tank was 14.8 towing into a 20 MPH plus wind right on our nose.

New Ranger is rated at 7500 lb tow, 1860 payload. The 2.3 EcoBoost they are using is pretty impressive 270 hp and 310 ft lbs torque. This is from Ford website never drove one. What's your kid's boat weigh?

Don’t know ; 18 ft FG boat with a 100 hp outboard and a small outboard for trolling . His travel trailer has a dry weight of a little over 5000 lbs if my memory is correct
The 4 cylinder turbo engine in my wife’s vehicle produce 250 hp and 260 lbs of torque and it’s coupled to a nine speed transmission. Gets us from point A to point B but beyond that I will keep my opinion to myself .
Don’t want to turn this into a back and forth so time to make this thread read only !

It’s is more than suitable IMO
All,
I recently bought a 2019 GMC Canyon V6 4x4. It pulls my new 17ft Casita almost like it not there. It is rated at 7,000lbs capacity vs. the 7,500 of the new ranger. The ranger is down on hp vs the. Canyon but has higher tourque and at the right rpm. I have watched some extensive reviews on both of these power trains and other than the vehicle itself would not shy away from the new 4 cylinder. My brother owns the new ranger and it feels more powerful than my V6. Unless you feel you really need v6 in the ranger, or are nervous about the new power plant this year my thoughts are the new engine is more than suitable for most. Test drive one like I did, one might be surprised..... of course make your own decisions based on what you are comfortable width.
