Hi all, Have a weird/ dangerous mod I found
So I just got the new to me burro home. Its been in the family for 10 years and now Its my turn. I was underneath looking around and saw this. I have a wooden tongue box that holds the propane tank. From the bottom of the compartment that holds the tank, there is a 2" pvc pipe that goes under the box and up into the trailer. It is cut off just above floor level. The wooden box is unvented so any propane leak is piped straight into the living space.
Any wisdom to this or was someone having Crack for breakfast?

Is that where they ran the propane line inside the pvc to protect it from road damage?
If so then simply seal it at both ends and vent the box.
Or, of course, lose the box altogether.

Yea Floyd, that was the first thing that came to my mind too. Must be where wires and gas lines go in.

Whether it is containing the propane line or the electrical, (or both,) it should be totally sealed where it enters the trailer. I agree that probably doing away with that wooden box and plastic pipe altogether would be the way I'd go. Just my opinion...

Kellogg's Crack Crispies?
Sheesh.
I agree, eliminate, seal, vent. The life you save may be your own!

There is nothing in the pvc pipe. The gas line is regular black pipe under the trailer. It may have been a hose route at one time. Either way it's coming out

I've seen lots of mods but this is a first. The propane tank housing should be ventilated. Propane is heavier than air so will flow downwards, hence the vent in the bottom of the housing. This vent should never be plumbed into the unit. If the gas/electrical lines need protection this isn't the way to do it.

Too bad you can't ask the dead guy why he installed that pipe.

No idea why it is there and empty.
If I had put it in, it would have been there to protect the currently used flexible gas line, and I wouldn’t have worried about venting the outside box... a wood box is not very air tight as a general rule. If it really worries you (and you’re going to keep it for the gas line)you can get out your drill and put a couple of vent holes in the bottom of the box so the heavier-than-air gas can drain out. JMHO, though, ultimately you’ve got to please yourself.

if you are worried vent both
If you are worried I would vent both the box and the pipe AT THE BOTTOM. That should prevent any problem. Obviously sealing it as it goes into the living space would be wise. I take it that didn't happen???
I can see this being a good idea if you took it places with a lot of road hazards. But why are you doing that. Actually I do and I have taken that into consideration in some updates and protected them because that might happen. I would have expected the propane line to be in that. And that would prevented it from getting "road hazarded". But yeah I would vent the bottom of the pipe. Probably a couple 1/4 inch holes along the bottom of the pipe.
By fun one was where I found the commercial mount for my propane tanks actually had been fastened with two very small sheet metal screws :-(

Hope your Monday is great Kai....remember....It's always darkest before the dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it. Have fun!
